This unit of study provides students with an overview of the development of jazz from its earliest stages to the present and from its origins in New Orleans to its contemporary expressions in Australia, Europe and elsewhere. An understanding of key stylistic and technical aspects of jazz will be undertaken through immersion in jazz-related skills of listening and transcription as well as idiomatic improvisation, which are developed progressively through weekly workshops.
