This unit will focus on the narrative and rhetorical strategies used to depict and engage emotion. It will examine the ways in which feeling is both conceptualised and motivated in novels from the long nineteenth century, and relate developments in the fictional understanding of emotion to those in philosophy and the natural sciences.
